Our information as to when silk was first introducted into India is extremely sketchy. Dr. Moti Chandra, in his learned Hindi book already quoted, takes great pains to discover when silk was first known to Indians, and some of his literary researches into this question are of considerable value. What is certain is that great scholar, Panini, mentions what must be taken to be silk; but as the date of Panini is as uncertain must be taken to be silk; but as the date of Panini is as uncertain as most things in those remote days of Sanskrit literature, all one can say is that silk may have been known, indeed probably was known, as an imported article around the 2nd century B.C.,or possible in the 3rd.

It would be rash to surmise that the Emperor Asoka possessed more than a few pieces of it, and I believe it to be quite unrealistic to think that ladies and gentlemen could afford to buy in great quantities a material that was brought laboriously by caravans travelling across the Takla Makan Desert of Central Asia and over dangerous mountain passes above 16,000 feet high.
